The week ending September 14, 2014 was characterized by the proliferation of military and insurgent-related activity in Libya, Mali, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. Libya witnessed deadly confrontations in Tripoli, politically-motivated assassinations in Benghazi and Derna, and a boat capsizing which took the lives of 200 African migrants.
Algeria was the scene of large anti-narcotic and contraband operations, whereas the crack down on Jihadists continues in both Tunisia and Algeria, which have reinforced border security. On the Economy front, Morocco seeks international financial aid while Tunisia’s trade deficit widened. Down in the Sahel, a land mine explosion killed a UN peacekeeper in Mali as the peace talks continue in Algiers.
